Viessmann Vitodens 050-w Review – Introduction
For our review, we’ll be talking about a premium, affordable boiler currently available in the UK. Although price is clearly a strong point, it also houses internal components that excel in design, material and performance.
One such component that Viessmann like to highlight across their entire boiler range, is the Inox-Radial Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger. With a material quality close to surgical steel, the robust and quality design allows the boiler to excel in efficiency. It’s also patented/made by Viessmann themselves, and is much better than Aluminium – another popular option.
Who are Viessmann?
Viessmann themselves are a German boiler manufacturer with decades of experience under their belt. With 23 production companies in 12 different countries across the world, they’ve made a big impact in the heating industry.
With that in mind, Viessmann’s focus in the past for a while was in commercial heating, but for many years now, they’ve since proven themselves more than worthy as a major competitor in the domestic boiler industry.
Their UK headquarters are based in Telford, Shropshire, with even bigger plans for the UK in the future!
Having been in operation since 1917, Viessmann are now a worldwide company, but they’ve remained ever present in the UK, with a long list of boilers under their belt, including the star of the show, the Vitodens 050-W.
Viessmann are proud to celebrate their impressive experience and boiler range, striving to innovate at every opportunity. They’ve proven this through being awarded Which? Best Buy for the last 3 years in a row, with extremely competitive warranties to back it up.

What is Energy Efficiency?
Energy efficiency is an important benefit to understand when it comes to your boiler. If your boiler is more than 20 years old, it’s efficiency level could be as low as 60% – but what does this actually mean?
When we talk about a boiler’s efficiency, we’re referring to the overall percentage of energy that it uses to provide that almighty heat and comfort to your home. If we use our previous example of ‘60%’, that essentially means that a massive 40% of energy is utterly wasted.
Now consider that with the Viessmann Vitodens 050 – with an Energy Efficiency rating of up to 97% available, it’s easy to see just how much you can benefit from upgrading to such an A-rated boiler!
The Vitodens 050 also has a modulation range of up to 1:4, so is able to alter the temperature to closely match the heating load, saving you from wasting unnecessary energy.
We’ve touched upon it briefly already, but reliability is one of the biggest strengths about the boiler in this Vitodens 050 review.
The star of the show – the Inox-Radial stainless steel heat exchanger – is one of the main reasons the 050 is held in such high regard. Many competitors to Viessmann will only use Aluminium, and while having its own benefits, it doesn’t offer the same longevity.
The quality of the heat exchanger’s stainless steel is strong enough to offer improved resistance to corrosion, and rust not just short from the boiler’s initial operation, but for its lifespan of up to 15 years.
Let’s go into even more detail.
As an alloy, chromium content reaches levels of around 10.5% minimum, and a maximum of 1.2% carbon by mass. With corrosion resistance this high, it means maintenance is less work, so your boiler’s lifespan is extended.
Compare this to Aluminium, which has good thermal conductivity to begin with, but starts to drop as more time passes. So, in the long run, you may end up paying more in repairs than you would with a boiler with top quality components!
A reliable thermostat can upgrade your boiler’s efficiency from ‘good’ to ‘great’.
There are many brands currently available on the market, and you’ll find that some do the same thing without offering much else. However, when choosing a thermostat for your boiler, be sure to consider the following:
- Easy controls
- Reliable technology
- Brand recognition
One of the best ones we like to recommend is Google’s Nest Generation 3 Learning Thermostat. Using a highly advanced learning algorithm, the thermostat is able to adapt to your living habits and detect when you’re in the property, for how long and how many times by using the power of WiFi connected to your smartphone.
As well as this, the Nest Learning Thermostat will automatically adjust to a custom Eco temperature if you’re away from the property. This will help save you money when you return, when it will reach your scheduled temperature.
In doing so, it adjusts your boiler’s settings to optimise on efficiency and saving money. On top of this, you can also have full control over your thermostat remotely thanks to your smart mobile device.

You may have noticed that the Viessmann Vitodens 050 boiler is more compact than some of its other competitors, with dimensions of 400mm x 707 x 350
With this convenient size, you can enjoy:
- More options for where you can install your new boiler
- More space made available for maintenance/easy access
Not only this, but it’s also a testament to the talented manufacturer Viessmann who are able to design and produce a boiler that can perform much better than many other brands such as Worcester Bosch or Ariston, but in even smaller space.
Vitodens 050-W Cost
There are many things to consider when planning a boiler installation – even with the Vitodens 050 as your chosen boiler. For example, you’ll need to make sure you match the boiler output to your property requirements, as the heating and hot water demand will depend on the KW (Kilowatts) you require. Along with the boiler itself, you’ll also have to consider:
- Flue position
- Boiler position
- Any required filters – Magnetic filter and a limescale filter (hard water areas only)
- Condensate (Condensate pump may be required if gravity fall not available)
- Weather compensation technology
- Chemical flush with added inhibitor
- Gas upgrade (if required)
- Boiler conversion – e.g. from system to combi/storage combi oropen vent to combi
- Radiators – Single entry or twin entry or 8mm – 10mm pipework
- Any further work required
Although this may worry you, you can relax! All of these features are included with the sole purpose of ensuring your central heating system can enjoy an extended lifespan in the best condition possible.
What is ‘Weather Compensation Technology’?
Weather compensation technology is another added benefit to the Viessmann Vitodens 050-W that you can enjoy to really help you save some money.
The important thing to remember is that regardless of the quality of your boiler, your property naturally loses heat through the fabric of the building itself. This problem however can thankfully be solved quite easily thanks to weather compensation technology.
If you decide to have this included in your installation, you’ll have an outside temperature sensor installed on the north-facing wall of your property. When listening to this sensor, your boiler alters the temperature of your radiators so that it matches the heat loss that would otherwise be suffered from the cold temperatures outside.
By retaining this sort of control over your central heating temperature, you can ensure your energy bills remain low while your home stays comfortably warm. Studies suggest that weather compensation can save up to 30% on your overall gas bills.
